Cat insurance can cover a number of factors, depending on which policy you go for. At Argos Pet Insurance, we know that your cat can develop a health condition or get ill at any time so that’s why we provide a number of policies that could cover your vet bills for various treatments, along with other benefits too. Our cat insurance policies could cover:

  • Veterinary fees including dental cover, complementary treatment, physiotherapy, behavioural illnesses and overseas veterinary treatment

  • Advertisement and reward if your cat or kitten goes missing
  • Theft or straying
  • Emergency boarding cattery fees if you are hospitalised for more than 48 hours
  • Complementary veterinary helpline, live chat and video
  • Other travel cover, such as holiday cancellation, quarantine costs, loss of healthcare certificate, or emergency expenses abroad if your cat is sick or goes missing whilst abroad.

If your cat was to sadly pass away from an accident or injury, we can also cover some of the costs, including cremation if you choose.

Please note that we won’t cover any pre-existing conditions and that terms, conditions, excesses, exclusions and limitations apply. You can find out more about the terms of our cover in our policy documents.

Other excesses

When your cat reaches 10 years old your excess will change from £99 to the greater of £99 or 20% contribution toward each vet claim made. Please note these values are subject to change.

Please note that we won’t cover any pre-existing conditions and that terms, conditions, excesses, exclusions and limitations apply. You can find out more about the terms of our cover in our policy documents.

Remember, we have an upper age limit for insurance policies. You can insure your pets from 8 weeks old but for cats you cannot take out a new policy after their 10th birthday, for dogs their 8th birthday (5 years for some breeds, please see FAQs) and rabbits their 5th birthday. However, once purchased, cover can continue up to any age if you renew the existing policy, without a break in cover.

Your cat insurance policy: what’s not covered

Under 8 weeks old…

You can start your Argos Pet Insurance policy from when your kitty is 8 weeks old, right up to their 10th birthday.

Once you’re signed up you can carry on with the insurance for the rest of your cat’s life.

While covered, you must take proper and reasonable care of your pet – and of course, keep on top of those recommended check-ups and vaccinations.

Pre-existing conditions

These refer to any condition or symptom, or anything related to it, that you were aware of or has been noted and/or investigated by a vet before the policy start date. If you do have medical history tell us and we’ll be honest with you on what we can and can’t cover your pet for.

Once your pet suffers from a medical condition it can become very difficult to get another insurer to offer cover for that condition. This means you could be stuck with an insurer to ensure that your cats existing condition remains covered. So, it is important that you take the time to select your pet insurance company based not just on cost, but on other factors.

Illness that could be prevented

Whilst we will insure your cat without having had vaccines, if it catches an illness it could have been vaccinated against, we won’t cover your vet costs.

Dental cover

Your pet is not covered for routine dental work such as cleaning. However, your pet will be covered for dental treatment if caused by an illness, accidents and injuries, providing there is evidence of having had dental check-ups as recommended by your vet and any advice received is followed up within 6 months.

Pets we can’t insure

We won’t insure any dogs, cats or rabbits that are used for commercial breeding or monetary gain.

Treatment outside the EU

We won’t pay out claims for any incident outside the territorial limits of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Eire and the Member Countries of the Pet Travel Scheme (non-EU listed countries as defined by DEFRA are excluded).

Putting to sleep by government order

We will only cover putting your cat to sleep if it’s for humane reasons or to stop incurable suffering. We will not pay for this if it is by order from any government, local authority or anyone with jurisdiction in the matter.

Death from illness

If your cat is aged 10 or older, we wouldn’t pay out on a claim for death from illness.

Please note, this is not the full list of exclusions. Download our policy document for the full list.

Multi cat insurance

Have more than one cat in the family and wondering if you can get multi cat pet insurance? The answer is yes. At Argos Pet Insurance, we know that when your cats are not in full health, it can make the whole family feel down in the dumps too. With our multi-pet insurance, you could insure all of your feline friends and receive a minimum of £24 discount, made up of £1 per month per cat insurance policy. If you own a dog and would like to insure them too, you can still qualify for the discount. T&Cs apply.

Top tips to get the best from your cat insurance

Remember those jabs

Whilst we will insure your cat without having had vaccines, we won’t cover your vet costs for any treatment for an illness that is preventable by vaccination and you failed to vaccinate as recommended by your vet.

Keep your receipts

If you bought or made a donation for your cat, keep your receipt in case you need to claim back for the amount you paid. If you don’t have your receipt we may repay the current market value for the breed of your cat.

Think of us when you’re abroad

If your pet needs veterinary treatment whilst temporarily abroad you must pay the vet whilst you’re there. When you return home, call us immediately and report the claim.

Admin fees

There may be some administration fees included in your vet’s bill, say for filling in a claim form, but we cannot reimburse you for these.

To view full terms and conditions of our cover please ensure to read our policy documents.

How much is cat insurance?

The price of pet insurance for cats is determined by several different factors including the breed of your cat down to where you live. Some cats are predisposed to certain health conditions, and while that may not necessarily be a factor when they’re a kitten, they could be as they grow up and mature.

To get a gauge of cat insurance costs, get yourself some cat insurance quotes for all cover types and levels and compare the quotes. Do some research on the breed, read some cat breed guides to get an understanding of health problems they might suffer from. Factor those into your selection process and you’ll find the right cover for now and the future.

Is cat insurance worth it?

There are many reasons why we think that insuring your cat is important. But you may be wondering if you really need cat insurance. Your cat could get themselves into a spot of bother at any time, meaning that you may have to pay unexpected vet bills that could cost a lot of money, especially without insurance cover. At Argos Pet Insurance, we want to help you to focus on your cat’s health rather than worrying about paying the vet for their treatment.
